Softball Drops Doubleheader to No. 14 Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Haverford College softball team (15–17, 3–9 CC) dropped both games of a doubleheader against No. 14 Gettysburg (31–4, 11–1 CC) on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Jones Field on the campus of Gettysburg College.

Game 1: Gettysburg 9, Haverford 1 (5 Innings)

In game one,  Lauren Martin led the Fords at the plate with a team-high two hits, while Grace Stowe drove in Haverford's lone run. Gettysburg's Paige Forry notched her league-leading 21st win of the season, tossing four scoreless innings and striking out two Haverford batters.

The Bullets struck early with a four-run first inning. Morgan DeFreitas opened the scoring with a two-run single, followed by an RBI groundout from Renee Laczkowski. A passed ball allowed DeFreitas to score, and an RBI single by Carlie Goldstein later extended the hosts' lead to 5–0.

In the second, Elliana Hopple added an RBI double before scoring on another Laczkowski groundout, pushing the lead to 7–0.

Haverford broke through in the top of the fifth when Martin doubled to right-center and scored on an RBI double by Stowe. However, DeFreitas answered with her third hit and fourth RBI of the game in the bottom half, sealing a 9–1 Gettysburg win in five innings via the run rule.

Game 2: Gettysburg 10, Haverford 6

The second game was highlighted by a two-RBI game from Kyra Van Denburgh, while Addie Sapirstein and Maddie Etheridge were standouts offensively, as each collected three hits.

Gettysburg picked up right where they left off with a four-run first inning, featuring a three-run triple from Laczkowski and an RBI single from Anika Pelekis. The Bullets tacked on two more in the second, including an RBI double by Jamie Shaw.

Haverford began to claw back in the third. Sapirstein tripled and scored on an error to make it 6–1. Clarissa Smith came on in relief of Lauren Lamme and kept the Bullets off the board for the next three innings, giving the Fords a strong chance to rally.

The Fords tied the game with a five-run sixth inning. Kamaha'o Bode was hit by a pitch and later scored on a fielder's choice. Sapirstein singled home Etheridge, followed by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to make it 6–4. Van Denburgh then delivered a clutch two-run single to knot the game at 6–6, lighting up the Haverford dugout.

Gettysburg responded immediately in the bottom of the sixth. A wild pitch gave the Bullets a one-run lead, before Laczkowski added two more RBI with a double. Lauren O'Leary's RBI single capped off a four-run frame, giving Gettysburg a 10–6 advantage heading into the seventh.

Despite singles from Etheridge and Abby Litchfield in the seventh, Audrey Wright closed the door for the Bullets, completing the sweep as Forry earned her 22nd win of the season.

Haverford returns to action on Tuesday, April 22, with a road doubleheader against Muhlenberg in Allentown, Pa. First pitch in the Centennial Conference showdown is scheduled for 3 p.m.
