CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Haverford College softball team (13-13, 3-5 CC) split a doubleheader with Washington College (8-18, 3-5 CC) on Thursday afternoon at the Washington College Softball Field in Chestertown, Maryland as Centennial Conference action rolled on.
Game 2: Haverford 4, Washington College 1
Jocelyn Leal led the way offensively for the Fords in game one, collecting three hits and scoring once, her first hit marking the 100th of her career. Addie Sapirstein added two hits of her own, the second of which also marked her 100th career hit. In the circle, Lauren Lamme delivered another standout performance, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on seven hits and one walk, with three strikeouts.
Haverford struck first in the top of the first inning. After Sapirstein doubled and advanced to third on a single by Maddie Etheridge, Kamahaʻo Bode brought her home with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom half of the inning, Lamme worked out of a jam with runners on the corners, striking out Jenna Harper to end the threat.
The Shorewomen tied the game at 1-1 in the second, as Mia Mavoides delivered an RBI single to score Julia Weglarz.
Haverford responded in the third. Abby Litchfield reached third and then scored on a fielding error by Gracelyn Goforth to reclaim the lead. After Bode reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on a Leal single, Kyra Van Denburgh reached on another error—this time by Chloe Trefz—allowing Bode to score and extend the lead to 3-1.
Lamme then took control in the circle, shutting out the Shorewomen for the next four innings. In the sixth, Leal scored from second on a passed ball, pushing the lead to 4-1.
Despite hitting the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh, Lamme then retired the next three batters to earn her fourth complete game and seventh win of the season.
Game 2: Washington College 9, Haverford 0 (5 innings)
Kyra Van Denburgh paced the Fords at the plate in game two with two hits, while Leal and Litchfield each recorded one hit.
Washington College broke the game open in the second inning with four runs. Lilly Wenzel scored the first run on a fielding error, followed by an RBI single from Shannon Rosche. Rosche then came around on an RBI double by Mavoides, who later scored on another Haverford error to make it 4-0.
The Shorewomen added another run in the third before erupting for four more in the fourth, capped by a grand slam off the bat of Wenzel to make it 9-0.
In the top of the fifth, Litchfield reached with a single, but three consecutive outs ended the game early via run-rule, with the Shorewomen taking game two and the teams splitting the twin bill.
Haverford College Softball returns home to the Class of '95 Field on Sunday, April 13, to host Drew University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Prior to first pitch, the Fords will honor seniors Maddie Etheridge, Mia Kessinger, Rachel McQueen, and Abby Olivier during a special Senior Day ceremony.
