EWING, N.J. — The Haverford College baseball team went on the road for the first time in the young 2025 season and secured a 4-2 victory over the College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Tuesday afternoon at Ackerman Park, riding a dominant pitching performance by Sam Cohen and a key three-run sixth inning to improve to 2-1 on the season. Senior shortstop Henry Genth led the Fords offensively, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run, two runs scored and an RBI. His homer in the sixth inning helped key a three-run rally for the visitors.
Right-hander Sam Cohen delivered a stellar start for the Fords, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings while allowing four hits, striking out five and walking just one. Cohen (1-0) kept the Lions off balance before handing the ball to Wyatt Mattison, who worked 1.2 innings and allowed one run. Drew Doyle recorded a two-inning save, striking out three while giving up one run on three hits.
Haverford struck first against TCNJ hurler Jordan Gray in the third inning. Genth reached on an infield single and stole second, setting the stage for Chuck Norton. Norton deposited a single down the left field line to plate Genth for the opening run of the contest.
Cohen tossed a shutdown inning in the third and struck out the side in the fourth, retiring the Lions in order after a base hit began the frame. Cohen worked around a pair of baserunners in the fifth, and Haverford then added some insurance in the top of the sixth.
Genth led off the inning with a homer, and Anthony Runfola then reached on an error and stole second. Norton moved Runfola to third following a flyout, and Jack Wallis then reached on a fielder's choice, plating Runfola. Against new pitcher Jack O'Shea, Matt Dahl reached on an error that plated Kendrick Curry II for a 4-0 advantage.
The Lions got on the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings, with Mike LaGravenis and Ryan Goodall driving in runs, but Doyle limited the damage in the eighth and then worked around a two-out single in the ninth to seal his first save of the season.
The Fords finished with five hits but made the most of their opportunities, drawing two walks and stealing three bases. The Haverford pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts while limiting TCNJ to just one extra-base hit.
TCNJ pitching recorded 13 strikeouts, as Gray largely matched Cohen in the duel before Evan Frank struck out four in two scoreless frames.
Haverford will now return to action as the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic opens on Sunday, March 9. The Fords will face off with Augustana at 10 a.m. at Terry Park in Fort Myers, Fla., in the first of eight games in the Sunshine State.
