Women's Squash Places Five on All-Liberty League Teams

Full Liberty League Release

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's squash team was well represented on the All-Liberty League teams, with sophomore Joelle Phuah earning first-team honors, while seniors Catherine Fortin and Ariana Solecki, along with first-year Ofri Geva, were named to the second team. First-year Caroline Gay received honorable mention recognition.

Phuah, a Selangor, Malaysia, native, made an immediate impact as a transfer, competing primarily at the top two flights to earn Haverford's first-ever first-team slot in the Liberty League. She posted a 9-11 overall record, going 2-2 at No. 1 and 7-9 at No. 2. At the Liberty League Championships, she finished 2-1, recording wins over No. 31 Bard and No. 29 William Smith. She matched that 2-1 mark at the College Squash Association (CSA) Divisional Team Championships, defeating opponents from No. 23 Hamilton and No. 24 St. Lawrence to help propel the Fords in the Walker Cup. Earlier in the season, she was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week after a standout weekend in mid-November, earning top-flight victories against No. 26 Connecticut College and No. 30 Vassar.

Fortin, of Ipswich, Mass., concluded her Haverford career competing at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. The co-captain finished 8-12 overall, including a 2-0 mark at No. 2 and 6-12 at No. 3. She was named Liberty League Performer of the Week on Nov. 25 after playing a key role in Haverford's two-win day against Connecticut College and Vassar. Against the Camels, she outlasted Isabel Schumacher in a five-game thriller (13-11, 11-13, 11-4, 7-11, 11-9), securing a pivotal victory in a 5-4 upset. She followed with a dominant straight-game win over Vassar's Charlotte Tobin (11-7, 11-3, 11-6), helping the Fords complete a 9-0 sweep.

Solecki, of Brooklyn, N.Y., played primarily at the No. 1 flight in her final season, finishing 5-13 overall. She capped the regular season by earning Liberty League Player of the Week honors on her Senior Day. Competing at No. 1, she secured her first two wins of the season, edging William Smith's Reshika Rajarathinam in a five-game battle (9-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10) and cruising past Vassar's Adriana Ordaya in straight games (11-1, 11-3, 11-2). At the Liberty League Championships, she posted a 2-1 record with wins over the top-flight players from Bard and William Smith.

Geva, of Brookline, Mass., led Haverford in wins with an 11-9 record, competing primarily at the No. 7 flight in her rookie season. She went 3-0 at the Liberty League Championships and 3-1 at the CSA Divisional Team Championships. In Haverford's lone home doubleheader, she was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week after anchoring the bottom of the ladder with two victories, including a straight-game win over William Smith's Danie DeZart (11-6, 11-2, 11-6). She followed with a commanding victory over Vassar's Iesha DeSilva, allowing just one point in an 11-0, 11-1, 11-0 sweep.

Gay, of Westwood, Mass., finished her rookie campaign with an 8-12 record, competing primarily at the No. 6 flight. She went 2-1 at the Liberty League Championships and 3-1 at the CSA Divisional Team Championships, delivering key wins over opponents from No. 23 Hamilton and No. 24 St. Lawrence during the season's final weekend at the Specter Center in Philadelphia.

Haverford is coming off one of the strongest seasons in program history, finishing 9-11 overall with a 3-1 record against Liberty League opponents in the regular season. Despite the graduation of Solecki and Fortin, the Fords will look to build on this momentum and take another step forward in the 2024-25 campaign with a solid core of young players making big contributions.
