Baseball Explodes for 17 Runs in Win Over Eastern, 17-11

HAVERFORD, Pa. The Haverford College baseball team (9-3) posted its second-highest run total of the season Tuesday afternoon, defeating Eastern (5-10) by a score of 17-10 at Kannerstein Field.

Reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Week Harry Genth starred in the victory, launching two three-run homers and driving in six runs. Anthony Runfola also had a standout performance, recording a season-high five RBIs, including a towering three-run shot in the seventh inning that helped break the game open.

On the mound, Colin Lewis earned his first win of the season, tossing three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

After starting pitcher Alex Jenkinson held Eastern scoreless in the top of the first, Runfola put the Scarlet and Black on the board with an RBI double down the left-field line, scoring Daniel Rosman. Jack Wallis followed with a single up the middle, plating Genth and Runfola to give Haverford an early 3-0 lead. The Fords weren't done there—Luke Treese ripped a two-run triple to bring home Wallis and Matt Dahl, extending the advantage to 5-0.

Eastern responded with two runs in the second, courtesy of a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly. Haverford quickly answered in the bottom half when Wallis beat out an infield single to score Genth, making it 6-2.

A two-run homer from Brian Lang in the top of the third trimmed Haverford's lead to 6-4, but the Fords countered in the bottom of the inning with a Chuck Norton RBI groundout, restoring a three-run cushion at 7-4.

Eastern capitalized on defensive miscues in the fourth, scoring three runs off three errors and a wild pitch. A double steal and another two-run blast from Lang propelled the visitors to a 10-7 lead. However, in the bottom of the inning, Genth delivered his first three-run homer of the day, tying the game at 10-10.

After Lewis worked a scoreless fifth, Genth struck again with his second three-run blast, pushing Haverford ahead 13-10. Lewis then shut down the Eagles in the sixth and seventh innings before Runfola crushed a three-run shot to left, extending the lead to 16-10.

Ethan Goldstein, fresh off an immaculate inning against Hiram last week, entered in the eighth and delivered another scoreless frame. The Fords tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half when a bases-loaded walk to Runfola forced in Treese, making it 17-10.

Although Brock Langlotz led off the ninth with a solo home run for Eastern, Adam Naeglen retired the next three batters, sealing a 17-11 victory for Haverford.

The Fords return to action on Friday, March 21, traveling to Immaculata, Pa., for a non-conference matchup against the Mighty Macs. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
