HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College volleyball team (15-8, 6-3 CC) put forth a complete performance on Senior Day to stun the seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (21-4, 7-1 CC) in four sets. Haverford, behind an energetic and engaged Senior Day crowd, handed the Blue Jays their first loss to Haverford since 2013, ending Hopkins' 11-match winning streak against the Fords, while also giving Haverford its highest-ranked win in the AVCA poll era.
The loss was just the second in CC play for Johns Hopkins since the start of the 2019 campaign. The victory also clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference Championship tournament for the third consecutive season.
Prior to first serve, Haverford honored its senior class of Izabela Potocnjak, Eliana Brown, Cameryn DeBlecourt, and Kayla Chu.
When things got underway, the Blue Jays came out firing, hitting .323 while committing just two errors in the first set, cruising to a 25-13 lead. From that point, the Fords had an immediate response in front of the revved-up crowd. Haverford began the frame on a 7-1 run, behind strong attacking from Potocnjak and Fiona Moord, and ultimately extended the lead to 11-5 after Gia Frank's kill. Johns Hopkins hung around, tying the score at 13-13 and eventually pulling ahead 18-17 on a Helena Swaak service ace. The teams traded brief runs well into extra points, where Johns Hopkins ultimately had set point up 29-28. Brown found the floor with an emphatic kill to tie things, and the Fords then got set point of their own after Frank and Moord teamed up for a block. Potocnjak then served up an ace to give Haverford the frame.
The third belonged to the Fords as they forced Johns Hopkins into 11 errors against just eight kills. The visitors held an 11-9 lead before Haverford unleashed a sustained run, taking a 7-1 stretch to go up 16-12. After a 2-0 JHU spurt, the Fords kept their foot on the gas with eight consecutive points, including a stellar service turn from Cella, to get set point at 24-14 before another JHU error ended things at 25-16.
In the closeout fourth, the Fords and Jays didn't find much separation in the early goings, with Hopkins out to a 14-11 lead before Haverford evened things at 16-16 behind back-to-back blocks from Moord and Potocnjak. The Fords kept it going behind Brown and Moord, pulling ahead 20-18 before Brown turned in a kill and a service ace to give Haverford set point at 24-19. Frank then ended the day with a kill at 25-20.
Elizabeth Cella led a balanced Haverford attack with 13 kills and three service aces. Eliana Brown recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 19 digs, while Fiona Moord was a force at the net with nine total blocks in the triumph. DeBlecourt orchestrated the offense with 28 assists, and libero Kira Chaney anchored the defense with a match-high 20 digs. Haverford finished the match with nine aces and 13 total team blocks.
