Women's Soccer Grounds the Owls, 2-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College women's soccer team (4-5-3, 2-3-0 CC) earned a 2-0 victory over Bi-Co rival Bryn Mawr (5-7-0, 0-4-0 CC) on Wednesday afternoon at Walton Field. Both goals came in the second half, with a pair of first-year players finding the back of the net for their first collegiate goals.

The Fords tallied 12 shots, including five on target, while limiting the Owls to just five attempts. The win marked Haverford's second Centennial Conference victory of the season.

The first half saw both sides trade possession as neither team managed to find a breakthrough. Haverford pressed early, with Carly Rusak testing Bryn Mawr goalkeeper Lily Blackman in the second minute.

The Scarlet and Black created several corner kick opportunities through Emma Kirk, but the Owls' defense held strong. Bryn Mawr's only attempt of the half came from Rece Anton, whose effort sailed high, as the teams entered halftime scoreless.

The Fords came alive after the break. Sophia Mitchell broke the deadlock in the 71st minute off an assist from Olivia Daulerio. After intercepting a goal kick from Blackman, Daulerio sent a quick pass forward to Mitchell, who sprinted onto the ball and slotted her shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0. Just six minutes later, Haverford doubled its lead when Vilena Tchernychev buried a corner from Kirk in the 77th minute. Kirk's bending service from the left side carried to the back post, where Tchernychev was perfectly positioned to tap home the insurance goal. Bryn Mawr generated a few late looks from Adelynn Arroyo and Hailey Ferrier, but Haverford's defense stood tall to secure the clean sheet in the waning moments.

Mitchell tallied the game-winning goal on her lone shot of the afternoon, while Tchernychev added a goal from her only attempt. Daulerio notched an assist and registered two shots, and Kirk provided the helper on the second goal. Alejandra Diaz led the attack with four shots, including one on target.

For Bryn Mawr, Blackman recorded three saves while facing five shots on goal. Anton led the Owls with two shots, while Ferrier and Alexandra Morales each added one attempt.

Haverford returns to Centennial Conference play on Saturday, October 11, traveling to Carlisle, Pa., to face Dickinson. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
