HAVERFORD, Pa. — The No. 16 Haverford College field hockey team (12-4, 6-3 CC) fell to No. 2 Johns Hopkins (15-1, 8-0 CC) by a score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Swan Field. Before the match, the Fords celebrated their six seniors with a ceremony honoring their accomplishments and impact on the program both on and off the field.
Johns Hopkins struck first just over three minutes into the opening quarter when Sophia Albano scored off an assist from Caeli Robinson to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Robinson broke through the defense and sent a pass across the front of the cage, where Albano redirected it into the goal. Haverford looked to answer quickly with shots from Holly Vincent and Erica Pardón, but both attempts went off target as the Blue Jays maintained their early advantage.
The second quarter proved quiet on both ends, with Haverford's best chance coming from Alice Stein in the 16th minute, whose shot was saved by Johns Hopkins goalkeeper Jessica Lapidus. Both defenses held firm, and the teams went into halftime with the score still 1-0 in favor of the Blue Jays.
Johns Hopkins doubled its lead early in the third quarter as Grace Waldeck converted off a deflected shot from Robinson at the 33:06 mark. The Blue Jays continued to pressure the Haverford defense, earning multiple penalty corners, including one that resulted in a defensive save by Louisa Coughlin. The Scarlet and Black generated chances of their own, with Vincent forcing a save from goalkeeper Aubrey Kilgore following a penalty corner from Abigail Trapp, but the Blue Jays preserved their two-goal lead entering the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Johns Hopkins earned an early penalty corner but was denied by the Haverford back line. The Fords continued to push late, with Naomi York firing a shot in the 55th minute that was saved by Kilgore. Despite several late attempts, including a pair of shots from Waldeck that were turned aside by goalkeeper Steph Ionescu, the Fords were unable to cut into the deficit as the match ended 2-0.
Ionescu made three saves across 60 minutes of action, while Vincent led Haverford with two shots, slotting one on goal. Pardón added another attempt, and Coughlin recorded a key defensive save in the third quarter to keep the Fords right in contention.
For Johns Hopkins, Robinson tallied two assists, with Albano and Waldeck each scoring once. Kilgore made two saves in 45 minutes to help secure the win for the Blue Jays.
Haverford will remain at home for its next contest, the penultimate regular season matchup of 2025, hosting rival Swarthmore on Wednesday, October 29, at 7 p.m. under the lights at Swan Field.
