HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College women's soccer team (5-7-3, 3-5-0 CC) earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over McDaniel (5-6-4, 2-4-2 CC) on Saturday afternoon at Walton Field.
First-year Sophia Mitchell provided the difference maker with a first-half goal, while the Fords defense recorded a combined shutout behind goalkeepers Lily Buyer and Allie Billups, who combined for four saves.
Both teams traded early opportunities, with Olivia Daulerio firing wide in the fifth minute and McDaniel's Alexis Keller-Posen testing Buyer in the eighth minute. The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Daulerio's cross was headed up into the air and fell perfectly for Mitchell, who volleyed it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season and the eventual game-winner.
McDaniel pushed for a response late in the first half, but Sarah Hurley's effort went wide as Haverford carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The second half saw sustained pressure from McDaniel, but the Scarlet and Black defense stood tall. Billups made key stops, including a save on Carly Brock's shot in the 63rd minute, to preserve the clean sheet.
Haverford continued to create chances of their own — Daulerio's shot was saved by goalkeeper Mack Langlo in the 55th minute, and Abigale Baker's header off a ste piece was turned away by a spectacular stop from Langlo late in the half. The Fords held firm defensively through the final whistle to secure the 1-0 shutout.
Mitchell tallied the match's lone goal on her only shot, while Devyn Telleen led Haverford with four shots, including three on target. Buyer and Billups combined for four saves over 90 minutes of play.
Langlo kept McDaniel in the match with eight saves, while Witzel and Brock led the Green Terror attack with two shots apiece.
Haverford will remain at home for its next contest, hosting Salisbury in non-conference action on Tuesday, October 21, at 4 p.m. on Walton Field.
