CHESTERTOWN, Md. — The 19th-ranked Haverford College field hockey team (12-1, 6-0 CC) secured a 2-1 overtime victory over Washington College (5-9, 2-4 CC) at as the Fords maintained their unbeaten conference record with a crucial road win at Roy Kirby Stadium. The triumph marked a program-record ninth straight victory and extended their best-ever start to 12-1.
The first quarter ended scoreless as both sides showcased strong defensive efforts. Haverford earned a penalty corner in the 10th minute but could not convert. The Shorewomen responded with a penalty corner moments later, generating a flurry of three shots. Natalie Watkinson's attempt was blocked, Julia Weglarz's shot was saved by reigning CC Defensive Player of the Week Steph Ionescu, and MaryCate Anson's effort went just wide.
Washington College broke through late in the second quarter when Emma Campbell scored at 27:02, assisted by Anson, as the Shorewomen capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity. Earlier, both teams had multiple chances from penalty corners—Anson and Watkinson had shots saved and blocked, respectively—while Haverford's Naomi York and Louisa Coughlin were denied by the WAC defense. The Shorewomen carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Haverford equalized early in the third quarter as Alice Stein scored at 39:23. Holly Vincent sent in a perfect pass from goal-line extended, finding Stein in position in front of the cage. The rookie tapped home her eighth goal of the season to even the score at 1-1.
Washington College applied early pressure in the fourth quarter, with Campbell and Samantha McMahon forcing defensive stops. Despite earning consecutive penalty corners, the Shorewomen could not convert. Haverford played much of the period shorthanded after receiving a yellow card to Erica Pardon at 56:16 and a green card to Stein shortly after, but the score remained tied, sending the match to overtime.
In the extra frame, Washington College again pressed forward, as Kendal Thomson's penalty corners generated multiple shots that were all turned aside by Ionescu. The Fords countered with strong runs from Abigail Trapp and Coughlin, but Shorewomen goalkeeper Schurman made several key saves to keep the game level. The breakthrough came at 68:47 when Coughlin stepped up after a foul in the circle to bury a penalty stroke and seal a 2-1 victory for Haverford.
Stein opened the scoring for Haverford, converting one of her two shots on goal. Coughlin added the decisive tally in overtime, finishing with four shots—two on target—and the game-winner. Vincent provided the assist on Stein's goal while recording one shot attempt. In goal, Ionescu made seven saves, conceding just once over 68:47 of play.
For Washington College, Campbell netted the lone goal on two shots, both on frame, while Anson registered an assist and led all players with seven shots, including three on target. Schurman totaled four saves on six shots faced.
Haverford now heads into a highly-anticipated ranked-vs.-ranked showdown against No. 13 Dickinson on Saturday at Swan Field, with both teams entering at 12-1 overall. First pass is scheduled for noon.
