HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College volleyball team (11-5, 2-1 CC) swept McDaniel College (8-9, 0-2 CC) in straight sets on Saturday inside Gooding '84 Arena, prevailing by set scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 in front of the home crowd.
The Fords and Green Terror traded early blows in the opening set before back-to-back kills from
Maggie Turner and
Eliana Brown gave Haverford an 11-9 edge. The Fords stretched the margin to 15-11 behind an
Elizabeth Cella kill and a service ace from
Izabela Potocnjak. A strike from
Gia Frank made it a four-point cushion, and although McDaniel rallied to within one, a 4-0 Haverford surge pushed the lead to 21-15. The Green Terror answered with a late run fueled by three straight kills from Mariya Carson, but consecutive McDaniel errors sealed the first set for Haverford, 25-20.
The second frame followed a similar script, with McDaniel taking an early 8-6 lead before a 5-0 Haverford run flipped momentum. Turner capped the stretch with a kill off a Brown serve to make it 11-8. The Fords maintained control from there, as kills from Cella and
Kayla Chu extended the lead to 15-11. Another dominant stretch followed — seven straight points for a 22-12 advantage — and Brown finished the frame emphatically with three consecutive kills to close out a 25-18 win.
Haverford wasted no time in the third, racing out to an 8-5 lead behind back-to-back kills from
Fiona Moord and Brown, plus a crucial
Olivia DeVille service ace. After McDaniel briefly closed the gap with a 4-0 spurt, the Fords countered with five unanswered points to regain control. Frank's kill made it 19-12, and with the Fords up comfortably at 21-13, Moord and Brown again powered the attack late to finish off the sweep, 25-17.
Brown led Haverford with 10 kills, while
Kayla Chu and
Cameryn DeBlecourt guided the attack with 10 and 19 assists, respectively. Frank added nine kills and contributed a block in a well-rounded performance. DeVille notched a career-high pair of service aces, while rookies
Lolly Adair and
Rachel Cohrs saw their first match action of the season.
Mariya Carson paced the Green Terror with 12 kills, while Kaitlyn Saidat was effective at the net, adding four total blocks to her effort. Kaylee Comstock directed the offense with 20 assists, and Stephanie Buttons chipped in eight kills to round out a balanced performance for McDaniel College.
Looking ahead, the Centennial Conference slate continues as Haverford will take on Ursinus College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15. The match will be held inside Gooding '84 Arena as the Fords continue a two-match homestand over the College's fall break period.
