WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Haverford College women's soccer team (2-1) dropped a non-conference matchup with the Cardinals of Catholic University of America (2-1-1) 1-0, on an overcast Saturday afternoon in the nation's capital.
After 20 minutes of both teams jockeying for position, Haverford's Lily Buyer was called into action for the first during the match, denying a low shot from Catholic's Peyton Coron.
Following two shots from Olivia D'Aulerio in the 21st minute and Phoebe Garfield in the 23rd minute, Buyer again stood tall on a chance from Isabel Doherty, to keep both teams tied at 0-0.
However it was the next chance that got the best of the Fords, as a shot from the Cardinals' Alex Berish got past Buyer in the 29th minute, giving the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
Both teams headed into the halftime break with Catholic holding onto a 1-0 lead, despite a late chance from Angelina Serrano that ricocheted off of the woodwork in the 42nd minute, which would have pushed the Cardinals' lead to 2-0.
The Scarlet and Black kept threatening to tie the match at 1-1, as in the 61st minute Sarah Klink put a shot that went upper 90, but was pushed away by Catholic goalkeeper Ava Rieger.
A shot from Cardinals' midfielder Mattigan DiBease hit off the post in the 71st minute, keeping the game at 1-0, however, that would be the final key chance of the game, as Catholic held on for the narrow victory.
The Fords held a 10-8 advantage in shots, but the Cardinals held Haverford to just one in the final 20 minutes to seal the shutout.
Following the trip to the nation's capital, women's soccer will return home on Wednesday, September 11, as the Fords will host the Widener Pride on Walton Field at 5 p.m.
