Women's Soccer Stymied by Washington College, 2-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. The Haverford College women's soccer team (9-3-1, 3-1-1 CC) suffered its first Centennial Conference loss of the season, dropping a Sunday afternoon match on Walton Field 2-0 to Washington College (6-2-5, 2-2-1 CC).

Just five minutes after a Phoebe Garfield shot was stopped by Washington goalkeeper Olivia Allen, the Shorewomen jumped on the scoreboard first in the 15th minute. Kayla Street sprinted along the flank and sent in a menacing cross that took a giant bounce past a charging Lily Buyer. Lurking behind Buyer was Reagan Longridge, who one-timed a shot into the back of the net to give Washington College the 1-0.

The Shorewomen defense were able to stifle the threatening Haverford offense for the remainder of the first half, as the visitors held onto a 1-0 lead going into the halftime break.

Six minutes into the second half, the Shorewomen found an insurance goal in the 51st minute. After a cross by Bridget Whiteside was knocked out of the box by Lauren Anderson, the ball hopped over to Kaileigh Brady at the top of the box. The sophomore rocketed a shot to Buyer's right side, ricocheting off the far post and going past the goal line, to extend the visitor's advantage to 2-0.

The 60th minute saw the Scarlet and Black's most dangerous chance of the game, as Grace Haskell was able to flick the ball at midfield to a sprinting Olivia D'Aulerio in the middle of the pitch. The junior midfielder took a Washington College defender one on one, before making her way into the box. D'Aulero blasted a shot to the left side of a rushing Allen, as the WAC keeper made a fantastic stop, parrying the dangerous shot away.

The troubling shot from D'Aulerio would be the final shot of the contest for the Fords, as the Shorwomen prevailed, defeating the Fords 2-0.

Despite the final score, Haverford outshot the Shorewomen 11-5, but it was Allen who made five crucial denials in the visitors' victory. Garfield paved the way for the Scarlet and Black offensively, putting three shots on frame.

The Fords will continue Centennial Conference play Wednesday, October 16, against the Ursinus Bears on Patterson Field in Collegeville, Pa. Kickoff for the midweek matchup is slated for 7:30 p.m.
