BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Haverford College baseball team (13-6, 2-0 CC) outscored Johns Hopkins by a total of 21-2 over the course of a two game sweep to begin Centennial Conference play. The Fords took game one by a score of 8-2 after two home runs from left fielder Matt Goss. In game two, they were even more impressive, scoring 13 runs and shutting out the Blue Jays on the back of a seven inning gem from starter Justin Herring.

In game one, Goss struck early with a two-run homer in the first inning to score Ben Verducci and give the Fords a two-run advantage. The sophomore out of Houston, Texas hit another in the ninth inning to give him three on the year. He finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.

Verducci was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. The first baseman also drew two walks.

Starting pitcher Stephen Ridings cruised, going the distance for the complete game. Over the course of nine innings, he struck out nine and gave up two earned runs on five hits.

The Fords carried the momentum over into game two and then some. Six batters had multi-hit games as Haverford walloped its conference foe.

Leadoff hitter Ben Furlong went 3-for-6 and finished a double short of the cycle, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning. He drove in five runs and scored two. Batting right behind him, Verducci went 4-for-6 with a run and an RBI. Spencer Sohmer, Sam Partee, and Zach Taylor each had two hits in the game. Taylor also hit his second home run of the season, giving Haverford two separate three-run home runs in a nine-run sixth inning.

On the mound, Herring earned his fourth win of the season after throwing seven scoreless innings and striking out seven. John Masella and Patrick O'Shea each pitched a scoreless inning to combine for the shutout.

With that, Haverford has ended its six game road trip with four wins. The Fords will head back home to continue conference play with a game against Swarthmore on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
