Volleyball Begins 2014 Season With 2-0 Day at Haverford Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team began the 2014 season with victories over the Widener University Pride and No. 22 UMass-Boston Beacons during day one of the Haverford Invitational. The Fords did not drop a set, sweeping both opponents by identical 3-0 scores.

In the Fords' first match of the day vs. Widener, juniors Keri Godbe (11) and Meg O'Day (10) led the team in kills to help secure the sweep (25-15, 25-18, 25-18). Godbe and O'Day picked up right where they left off last season as the duo finished first and second in the Centennial Conference in kills.

Junior Nina Mutty helped out defensively with 12 digs vs. Widener. The Fords had five players finish with at least seven digs and held the Pride to a .042 attack percentage.

Jessica Dembeck led the Pride with seven kills and a .278 attack percentage in the loss.

In Haverford's match vs. nationally ranked UMass-Boston, All-Centennial Conference first team members Godbe (14) and O'Day (12) continued to pace the Fords in kills. Haverford behind O'Day (.400) and Godbe's (.314) excellent attack percentage swept the Beacons (25-17, 25-16, 25-23). Junior Olivia Walsh had 17 assists in the victory.

The Fords had four players with at least 12 digs vs. UMass-Boston. The Beacons were held to a .064 attack percentage and did not have a single player record double-digit kills.

The Haverford Invitational continues tomorrow with the Fords taking on Stevenson University at 10 a.m. and Susquehanna University at 2 p.m.
