HAVERFORD, Pa. - Caitlin Gallagher's victory at No. 2 singles helped the Haverford College women's tennis team slide by Muhlenberg College, 5-4, in Centennial Conference action at the Bettye Marshall Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon.
Winning their fourth-straight conference contest, the Fords (9-6, 5-1 CC) jumped out to a 2-1 lead over the Mules (3-5, 2-3), ranked 12th in the Atlantic South, after doubles play.
Gallagher, paired with Alex Ferrara, registered an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles to give Haverford its first point of the day. Playing at No. 2 doubles, Kate Donches and Abbey Flynn persevered for a 9-7 victory to give the Fords the advantage heading into singles play.
Donches and Ferrara provided points three and four for Haverford with straight-set wins at No. 3 singles and No. 1 singles, respectively.
The deciding point of the match came down to the match-up between Gallagher and Muhlenberg's Emily Szulman at No. 2 singles. Lasting three hours, the marathon affair saw Gallagher take set one and Szulman claim set two by identical 6-2 scores. Rallying from a deficit in set three, Gallagher came all the way back to put the Fords in contention for the win. After having to move indoors due to darkness, Gallagher and Szulman resumed the third-set battle that fittingly went down to the wire. Winning her fifth-straight singles match, Gallagher outlasted Szulman, 9-7, in the tie-break which gave Haverford its second consecutive 5-4 victory.
Looking to extend their conference win streak, the Fords, ranked 16th in the Atlantic South, welcome Dickinson College on Saturday at noon.
