SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's tennis team fell, 7-2, to host Swarthmore College on Wednesday evening in Centennial Conference action.
Currently fourth in the conference standings, the Fords (10-8, 6-3 CC) gave the Garnet (8-4, 7-1) a battle but could not overcome the seventh-ranked team in the region.
Celia Tong and Rachal Torg tallied Haverford's first point of the contest with a hard-fought 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles. Alex Ferrara and Caitlin Gallagher gave Lia Carlson and Emily Rosenblum a tough fight at No. 1 doubles but fell, 9-7, in a tight contest.
Gallagher outlasted Kelsey Johnson at No. 2 singles to record the Fords' final point of the day. Winning her eighth-straight singles match of the season, Gallagher jumped out to the lead with a 6-3 victory in set one. Shaking off a setback in set two, Gallagher rolled past Johnson to claim a 10-2 victory in the super-set tiebreak.
Kate Donches suffered a narrow defeat at No. 3 singles as she pushed Katie Samuelson to the limit before falling in the third set.
Looking towards the playoffs, Haverford, ranked 20th in the Atlantic South Region, closes out the regular season on Saturday afternoon when it welcomes Gettysburg College to Bettye Marshall Tennis Courts. The match starts at 1:30 p.m.
