WESTMINSTER, Md. – Diana Perry's second goal of the afternoon helped the Haverford College women's lacrosse team earn its first Centennial Conference win of the season in thrilling fashion as it edged host McDaniel College 10-9 in overtime on Saturday.
The Fords (3-5, 1-1 CC) battled back from a three-goal deficit, 8-5, with 20 minutes remaining in the game to force overtime against the Green Terror (4-4, 1-1).
Tied at 9-9 at the end of regulation, Haverford made the most of its only shot of the overtime period when Perry, with an assist from Josie Ferri, found the back of the net during a man-up opportunity with 45 ticks left on the clock for her team-leading 17th goal of the season. The Fords' defense stood tall over the final 30 seconds of the extra session to secure its second-consecutive win.
Haverford came out firing on the day as it scored on its first three shots of the game. Making an impressive return to action from injury, senior Ferri converted a feed from Alexa Pesce to open the scoring two and a half minutes into the contest. After McDaniel evened the score a minute later, Ferri struck for another to give the Fords the 2-1 lead. Perrin Downing continued the fast start by the offensive attack when she tallied her sixth of the season to open up a 3-1 lead for Haverford with 25 minutes left in the half.
Converting her eighth free position attempt of the season, Ferri extended the Fords' cushion to three goals before the Green Terror displayed an offensive burst of their own to tie the contest at 4-4 with under eight minutes remaining before intermission.
After controlling play for several minutes, Haverford answered back when Ferri found Downing with 3:34 on the clock. Downing's second tally of the opening session closed out the scoring and provided the Fords with a one-goal advantage, 5-4, at the break.
Haverford's hopes of duplicating its early first-half surge diminished when McDaniel scored the first four goals of the second to claim an 8-5 lead.
Sparked by a free-position conversion by Perry at 18:31, the Fords began their comeback. Pesce's 12th of the year, on a man-up opportunity four minutes later, sliced the deficit to one.
Jen Schmidt's sixth goal of the season, off a feed from Ferri, with just six minutes left on the clock brought Haverford all the way back and tied the score at 8-8.
The two squads traded goals over the end of regulation as the Green Terror's Bridget Bopst deposited her second of the game with 5:35 remaining but Ferri came through once again a minute and a half later. Converting a free position attempt during a man-up opportunity, Ferri registered her fourth goal of the day to restore the tie.
The Fords fought off a free position try by McDaniel with five seconds remaining in regulation to set the stage for Perry's heroics.
Ferri finished with game-high honors in points (seven), goals (four), and assists (three). Perry contributed a strong all-around effort as she led Haverford with five ground balls to go along with her two goals. Downing also had a busy afternoon as she chipped in three caused turnovers, three draw controls, and two ground balls for the Fords.
Leah Hammerschlag (3-5) made eight saves to pick up her third win of the season.
Anna Beaudry led the Green Terror with three goals on six shots while Kate Goldstein (3-2) took the loss in goal.
Haverford, looking to extend its winning streak, faces another conference road test Wednesday afternoon at Muhlenberg College. Game time is 4 p.m.
