Comeback attempt falls short in Fords' season opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Time ran out on the Haverford College women's lacrosse rally Wednesday afternoon at Swan Field as it suffered a  heart-breaking 13-12 loss to the visiting University of Scranton in non-conference play to open the season.

The Fords (0-1) jumped out quickly to a 2-0 lead four minutes into the game as Perrin Downing opened the scoring at 26:47 and Josie Ferri followed 30 seconds later. After the Royals (1-0) tied the affair at 2-2, the two teams exchanged goals over the remainder of the half until Jilliana DePaolera's second goal of the opening session gave Scranton a slim 6-5 lead at the break.

The first 12 minutes of the second half saw both squads continue to trade tallies, before Downing's second of the contest deadlocked the score at 8-8 with 16:55 remaining. DePaolera's man-up tally, just under the six minute mark, capped a five of the next seven surge over an 11-minute stretch by Scranton to push the Royals out to a 13-10 advantage but Haverford did not go quietly.

Ferri's fourth tally of the game, with just over a minute remaining, trimmed Scranton's lead to 13-11 as the energized Fords went on the attack. Connecting on her first collegiate goal, Dayna Kimbrought the deficit to 13-12 but time ran out on the Haverford comeback attempt.

The Fords won the ground-ball battle on the day, 30-19, as well as draw controls, 16-11.

Leading the Haverford effort with Ferri was Alexa Pescewho tallied three goals, and Downing who finished with two. Megan Gallagher and Kenny Likes each added one.

The Royals were powered by three goals apiece from DePaolera and Emily Goss.

The Fords continue their difficult non-conference schedule on Saturday as they travel to Drew University for a 1 p.m. contest against the Rangers.
