ELMHURST, Ill. -  The Haverford College volleyball team took down Vassar College, 3-1, before falling to ninth-ranked University of Chicago, 3-0, on the opening day of play at the Elmhurst College Invitational.

In the initial match of the day, the Fords (17-7) cruised to a convincing victory in set one (25-14) before the Brewers (17-7) rallied to take set two (18-25). Haverford dictated play throughout the remainder of the contest as it claimed wins in sets three and four by identical 25-14 scores.

Freshman Keri Godbe led the offensive assault with 15 kills while classmate Meg O'Day chipped in with 13 and an impressive .367 attack percentage. Olivia Walsh contributed 35 assists.

Defensive contributions came from up and down the roster as Madison Fuelling (21), Godbe (15), Walsh (15) and Nina Mutty (14) all tallied double figures in digs. Seniors Emily Mills and Olivia Coburn-Flynn made their presence felt at the net with five block assists each. Mills also added one solo block.

Looking for a sweep on the day, the Fords encountered the highly-ranked Maroons (21-7) in their second match. Chicago held the Haverford attack in check and registered a straight-set victory (25-14, 25-18, 25-22).

O'Day was effective on offense once again with nine kills (.347 attack percentage). Godbe and Coburn-Flynn helped the cause with six kills and five kills, respectively, while Walsh dished out 24 assists.

Faced with the tough task of shutting down the Maroons' potent offense, Fuelling and Godbe shared team-high honors with 13 digs.

Play concludes Saturday at the Elmhurst Invitational with the Fords going up against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and North Park University.
