NEW YORK – Ian Goldberg's three-pointer near the halfway mark of the first half pushed Haverford College ahead of Regis College for good Monday evening in the nightcap of the New York University Holiday Tournament as the Fords downed the Pride 53-49 in non-conference action.
Haverford (3-7) increased its six-point halftime lead over Regis (3-6) to as many as 11 points in the second half but had to hold off a late rally by the Pride in the closing minutes. Goldberg cemented the victory with a pair of free throws to push the Fords ahead by seven with 17 seconds remaining.
Regis' Ryan Chambers closed the gap to four with a trey at the 12-second mark but a Bo Friddell steal ended the Pride's hope for a miracle finish.
The Fords fell behind early in the opening half, trailing 8-4 five minutes in, but a Friddell three-pointer followed a Goldberg layup to push Haverford ahead for the first time in the game. Soon after, tied at 12, Goldberg hit from behind the arc at 10:36 for the game's final lead change.
Goldberg finished with a game-high 15 points and added six rebounds, four assists and a steal. Brett Cohen scored 14 and tied with Friddell in rebounding with a game-high nine boards. Friddell chipped in with 10 points.
Haverford finished with 11 steals, five by Cam Baker who also added eight points, and out rebounded the Pride by a 39-36 margin.
Jonathon Josselin paced Regis with 11 points and six rebounds.
The Fords continue action in the tournament Tuesday night at 8 p.m. squaring off against host NYU (8-0) which defeated Clarkson, 63-56, in Monday night's opener.
