SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team opened its 2011-12 campaign at the two-day Swarthmore Invitational competing against Stevens Institute of Technology and host Swarthmore College.
In doubles flight A, the tandem of Kate Donches and Christina Bradley finished third with a 2-2 mark. On Saturday the Donches and Bradley defeated Swarthmore's Stephanie Chia and Katie Anderson 8-5. A day later they teamed up to defeat Nicole Portner and Mimi Bese from Stevens 8-3. The Fords' Jordana Bloom and Celia Tong took third in flight B by going 2-2.
In singles action, Sarah Gibson and Tong each went 2-2 for Haverford. At flight B Gibson earned victories over a pair of Ducks: Elena Cocineva (7-5, 6-2) and Danielle Stewart (4-6, 6-4, 9-7). Tong defeated Swarthmore's Brooke Wilkins (4-6, 6-3, 7-5) and Stevens' Lexie Handel (6-3, 7-5) in flight C action.
Haverford will compete at the three-day ITA regional tournament that begins Saturday, September 24 in Fredericksburg, Va.
