Softball salvages split with Widener after offensive outburst in nightcap

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- The Haverford College softball team slugged 13 hits, tying a season-high, on its way to an 8-0 win in five innings in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader against Widener University Thursday at Class of '95 Field.

The Fords (7-19) put together a two-out rally, with the help of two Pride (14-12) errors, to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Candice Smith started it off with a single. Jen DiCandilo followed with another single. On the same play, Smith rounded the bases after the center fielder overran the ball. DiCandilo scored from second on another error on a ball hit by Linda Iwanyk.

After adding a run on a Laina Gagliardi sacrifice fly in the third, Haverford crossed the plate four times in the fourth. Elizabeth Newman drove in the first run with a single, and the help of an error, that plated Maggie Cronin, who reached on an error to open the inning. After a Beth Davis single moved Newman to third, Smith a double to left center that scored Newman. DiCandilo and Iwanyk followed with RBI singles to make the score, 7-0.

Smith ended the game in the fifth with a one-out single that scored Charlotte Bax from third.

Smith led the Fords offense with a 4-for-4 effort. She scored three times and drove in two run. Davis and DiCandilo both added three hits and a run scored.

Cronin went the first four innings in the pitching circle to earn the win. She scattered three hits and struck out two batters. Brittany Stevenson pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

For Widener, Jackie Korang took the loss. She surrendered seven runs (four earned) on nine hits in 3.1 innings.

In game one, Widener took 2-1 lead in the third on back-to-back bunts by Jess Way and Jen Nance.

Kelsey Shultz added to the Pride lead with a two-run home run in the fourth to make the score 4-1. Widener added four more runs in the fifth inning. Kristina Ostaszewski had a RBI double, the lone run producing hit of the inning.

The Fords cut the gap to 8-5 in the home half of the sixth. Haverford loaded the bases with one out. Newman drew a walk that scored Erin Delaney. Marina Zambrotta came home on a passed ball. Smith added a two-run single.

Haverford tacked on a single run in the seventh.

Both teams reached double-figures in hits. Haverford outhit Widener, 13-10.

DiCandilo led the Fords with a 3-for-4 effort. Gagliardi and Delaney both added two.

Widener's Astyn DiNorscia was 3-for-4 at the plate. Meg Phillips went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Liz Carpino was the winning pitcher. She gave up five runs (two earned) on ten hits in 5.1 innings. Lisa Karmel took the loss. Karmel allowed four runs on six hits in four innings of work. She fanned two.

Haverford returns to Centennial Conference play with a doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, April 16. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.
