Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball breezes past Swarthmore, 62-41

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team ended its six-game losing streak to archrival Swarthmore College with a 62-41 Centennial Conference victory Wednesday evening at Tarble Pavilion. The game remained close in the early going, but a rampant Fords' run to close out the first half made the difference.

Just six Haverford (8-8, 5-6 CC) players got in on the scoring, but three finished in double-figures. Nina Voith led the way, scoring 16 points and making 4-for-4 from the foul line. Dominique Meeks posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Cara Wyant scored a career-high 12 points on 50 percent shooting from the field.

The first 20 minutes was a tale of two halves. Haverford went ahead for good just three minutes in, but the Fords' lead did not expand past four points until a pair of Voith free throws with 9:39 started a 15-6 run to close the half. Voith's three on Haverford's next possession put the visitors up by nine, 19-10. The Fords' lead increased to 16 twice before Kathryn Stockbower hit a jumper with just under 2:00 remaining that made the score 30-16 at the intermission. Haverford scored 12 of its first half points off Garnet turnovers.

In the second half Haverford's lead remained in double-digits. Voith buried a trey just past the 15-minute mark to extend it to 20, 42-22. Swarthmore (10-6, 6-5) put on the full court press and forced the Fords into 16 second half turnovers. Despite that effort, the Garnet could not get closer than 15. Haverford hit the high-water mark when Calla Miller's layup with 5:37 left pushed the lead to 22, 60-38.

Katie Lytle led the Garnet with 15 points while Kathryn Stockbower recorded her 77th career double-double, going for 11 points and a game-high 18 boards.

Swarthmore shot a chilly 23 percent from the field on the night and was just 2-for-19 from the arc. The Fords finished the night a respectable 46 percent from the field while making 7-of-13 three-pointers. Haverford outscored the Garnet 26-14 in the paint and 21-13 off turnovers.

Haverford's last win against the Garnet came Feb. 17, 2007 when the Fords took a 74-66 decision at Gooding Arena. The Fords' last victory at Tarble Pavilion came during the 1996-97 season. The victory gives Haverford a 5.5-1 advantage in the 2010-11 Hood Trophy competition.

Next up for the Fords is a trip to Gettysburg College Saturday for a 2 p.m. start.
