Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer falls to Eastern in Kickoff Classic championship game

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Scoring opportunities increased as the game wore on for the Fords in Sunday's championship finale of the Kickoff Classic but the Haverford College women's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in its 2-0 loss to tournament champion Eastern University.

Eastern (3-0) broke on top with a rebound goal in the game's sixth minute then extended the lead with a second goal, Kelsey Doutrich's third tally of the tournament, in the 23rd enabling the visitors to take a 2-0 lead over Haverford (1-1) into the intermission.

Shots from both teams were even, 5-5, in the opening half but in the second 45-minute frame the Fords held a 7-0 advantage against a packed in Eastern defense.

Midway through the second stanza Eastern goalie Alysia Goodman misplayed a pass back with pressure from Haverford's Sarah Andrade, but the keeper scrambled on her knees and was able to collect the ball about 12 yards out and clear it before Andrade was able to get a foot on the loose ball.

Another Haverford chance came off a corner kick, the Fords' only corner opportunity in the game, with the game clock winding down in the final minute.

Anna Rayne lofted a well-placed ball that came down a little past the near post and about a three yards out in front of the goal line where Michele Buonora was able to get a foot on the ball as it fell to knee-level, but her deflection floated upward just over the crossbar ending the scoring chance.

The Fords ended with 12 shots total, three of which were on frame and stopped by Goodman. The Eagles managed five shots with Haverford netminder Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds stopping two of the four shots on goal.

Haverford continues a three-game non-league start to its season with a trip to Immaculata University next Saturday followed by a Centennial Conference opener Wednesday, Sept. 15 against visiting Bryn Mawr College.
