Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Strong second half not enough for field hockey in loss to Profs

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Goals by Alex Waleko and Roxanne Jaffe weren't quite enough for the Haverford College field hockey team as it dropped its home-opener, 5-2, Saturday afternoon to Rowan University in a non-conference battle at Swan Field.

Rowan (2-0) built a two-goal lead in the first five minutes of action but Jaffe pulled Haverford (0-1) to within one with a goal on a penalty stroke at the 23:04 mark.

The visiting Profs extended the lead to two with an unassisted goal by Lauren Ross in the second half's opening minute. This time it was Waleko who cut the Rowan lead back to one with a score off an assist from Mary Hobbs in the 53rd minute.

Though the Fords tripled Rowan's shots total in the second stanza — 21 to just seven from the Profs — they could pull no closer as the visitors added a late pair of insurance goals for the final three-goal margin.

For the game Haverford totalled 19 shots on goal to 11 from the Profs and the Fords registered more than twice as many penalty corner opportunities, 17-8, in the loss.

Rowan goalie Lisa Apt, who gave way to Jen Goldberg over the final 4:38, earned the win with 15 saves while starting Haverford goalie Maggie Cronin took the loss stopping four shots. Courtney Knill stepped between the pipes in relief of Cronin after the intermission and picked up a pair of saves over the final 35 minutes.

Haverford will play another non-conference opponent in its next outing, Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m., against visiting Wesley (Del.) College.
