Volleyball splits at Tiger Invitational

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Haverford College volleyball team won its first match and lost its second Saturday afternoon at the DePauw (Ind.) University Tiger Invitational. The Fords swept Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology, 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-16), and lost to host DePauw, 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-18, 25-22), to finish the tournament in sixth place.

In the sweep of Rose-Hulman, Haverford (4-7) was led by Kelsey Cantwell's 12 kills to go along with a .444 hitting percentage. Laura Ramos had 11 kills and hit .429. Olivia Coburn-Flynn did not commit an error while hitting a team-best .667. As a team the Fords tallied seven blocks. Coburn-Flynn and Kate Comey each had five. Caitlyn Tranquillo once again led the team with 16 digs.

The Fords dominated the net against DePauw, setting a school record for blocks in a four-set match with 16.5. Coburn-Flynn tied her own four-set match record with 10 blocks. Cantwell, Comey and Jenine Abbassi each registered four blocks while Ramos and Hayley Lowrance added three each. Cantwell led the offensive attack with 16 kills and added 15 digs. Ramos had 13 kills and Lowrance recorded 10 kills and 17 digs. Tranquillo collected a team-best and career-high 25 digs.

Haverford returns home Wednesday evening to host a tri-match. The Fords open Centennial Conference play, hosting Gettysburg College at 5 p.m. followed by New York University at 8 p.m.
