Second half surge not enough for Fords in conference semifinal

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Making its first appearance in a Centennial Conference semifinal, Haverford College's women's lacrosse team rallied early in the second half against top-seed and fifth-ranked Gettysburg College but the host Bullets were able to go on to defeat the Fords, 16-6, Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.

Haverford (13-5) surrendered a goal to Gettysburg (16-2) within the first minute of action but Kenny Likes answered back two minutes later off a feed from Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds to knots things up at 1-1.

Six straight goals by the Bullets created a large cushion for the hosts before Jen Schmidt would halt the string with a tally for the Fords off an assist from Alexa Pesche who would finish with to more helpers in the game.

Trailing 10-2 coming out of the halftime break, the Fords generated a three-goal rally in less than three minutes starting with Josie Ferri's first of the game at the 27:39 mark of the second stanza.

Schmidt followed with her second of the game then Ferri added her second, on a free position attempt, to pull Haverford within five at 10-5.

Gettysburg put an end to the string with a goal five minutes later but Haverford's MaryAlice Postel netted her third of the season to cut back into the lead. However, that would be the final goal of the season for the Fords as Gettysburg would go on to post the next five goals to close out the win.

Leah Hammerschlag registered five saves for the Fords in goal while Gettysburg goalie Kristen Krammer finished with two saves.

Although the 2010 season ended with a tick-mark in the loss column, the Fords recorded a program-best 13 wins into the history books, qualified for the league tournament for the first time and won their first playoff game Wednesday night at Swan Field with their 11-9 defeat of Dickinson College.

Head coach Julie Young's 23 victories to start her career leading the Fords is the most wins in the initial two years of any women's lacrosse coach's tenure at Haverford since Deb Gallagher's teams won 24 games in the 1986 and 1987 seasons.
