Women's tennis back on winning track

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team swept through doubles then clinched their match against host Bryn Mawr College in singles action Friday afternoon in a 6-3 Centennial Conference outing in the suddenly brisk weather.

With temperatures dipping down toward the low 50s, Haverford (5-4, 4-1 CC) finished off the Owls (1-12, 0-5 CC) in singles with wins at Nos. 1, 3 and 4.

Already ahead 3-0 after doubles play, Jaclyn Porter swept aside Leah Raj at No. 3 in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) to put the Fords one win away from the team victory with five more matches yet to be finished.

Katie Drooyan did the honors clinching the Haverford victory with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Elizabeth Ver Hoeve at No. 4. Katie Wettick added the sixth and final point for the Fords with a back-and-forth match at No. 1 finally defeating Bryn Mawr's Anna Perocchi by scores of 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8).

Drooyan and Fumiko Shogase opened the scoring in doubles with an 8-3 victory at No. 2, followed by Fisun and Celia Tong winning at No. 3 by the same score. Porter and Wettick teamed up for the 8-4 win at No. 1 that sent the Fords into singles action with a three-point lead.

Haverford had won two matches in a row and was undefeated within the league at 3-0 until a defeat at the hands of visiting Dickinson last Saturday, but the Fords hope their victory over Bryn Mawr has started a new win streak as they'll head to Gettysburg College Saturday for a 1 p.m. conference match-up against the Bullets.
