Red Devils late surge downs men's lacrosse, 9-8

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Haverford College men's lacrosse team held a four goal advantage after three periods, but No. 5-ranked Dickinson College scored the final four goals of the game to pull off the stunning comeback for 9-8 Centennial Conference victory Saturday.

Haverford (5-5, 1-3 CC) was led by Max Hjelm and Phillip Valliant who scored two goals apiece. A quartet of Fords each tallied one goal each.

Sam Greenburg had a game-high four goals for Dickinson (10-1, 3-1 CC). Chris Dodson added two while three others scored once.

The Fords struck first, just 46 seconds into the contest as Valliant got HC on the board. Dickinson answered with goals from Greenberg and Ted Sirvaitis to take a 2-1 lead.

Brian Fleishhacker scored his first goal of the season to tie the game with 3:42 remaining in the first period and Valliant and Travis Gregory tacked on the only two scores of the second to give the Fords a 4-2 advantage at the break.

Haverford came out firing to open the second half with goals from Hjelm and Zack Cohen to stretch the margin to 6-2. Sam Abramson found the back of the net on Dodson's second assist of the day with 8:04 on the clock in the third.

Hjelm closed out the third period with an unassisted goal at the 2:21 mark to give Haverford a 7-3 advantage heading into the final quarter. The Red Devils saved their best for last and wasted little time making a move as Greenberg struck twice in the opening three minutes to pull the Devils within two at 7-5.

Myles Monaghan broke through to stretch the lead to 8-5 with 8:42 remaining in regulation. It was all Red Devils from that point. Dodson finished a feed from Dewey Dubord to trigger the five-goal Devil run at the 6:50 mark.

Greenberg picked-up a loose ball and fired it into the net to pull Dickinson within a goal with 5:09 left to play.

Dodson tallied again, off an assist from Sirvaitis to pull the Devils even at the 2:59 mark. The Red Devils gained possession and following a timeout tallied the game-winner as Ward Gruppo found himself wide open in front of crease. He scored off a feed from Abramson with 2:15 on the clock.

Joe Banno turned in a strong performance in goal for Haverford, making 20 saves.

Tyler Magann came up big in the Red Devil cage, making 15 saves and controlling a game-high seven ground balls.

The Fords travel to Collegeville, Pa. Wednesday evening to take on Ursinus College at 7 p.m.
