Women's tennis rallies but falls short at Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team put up a fight against the Lady Colonels of Wilkes University Thursday afternoon in non-conference action but eventually fell to the hosts, 5-4, after twice rallying from two points down.

Wilkes (9-4), ranked 15th in the same ITA Atlantic South Region in which the Fords (7-5) rank 17th, took a one point lead into singles competition following a pair of doubles victories. Jaclyn Porter and Katie Wettick earned Haverford its point at No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 win.

The Lady Colonels stretched the lead to 3-1 with a win at No. 6 singles but Katie Drooyan defeated Alexis Donner at No. 4 to cut the margin back down to one.

Wilkes upped the lead again with a win at No. 5 to pull within a point of capturing the team victory but Haverford bounced back with a pair of wins.

Helen Fisun handled Victoria Bybel in straight sets at No. 3 then Porter knotted the match up with a straight set win at No. 2 over Katrina Lynn.

Melanie Nolt broke Haverford's hearts, though, with a win over  Wettick at No. 1 singles, gaining revenge for Wettick's and Porter's doubles win over Nolt and Bybel earlier.

The Fords return to Centennial Conference action with their next outing, a Noontime match Saturday at McDaniel College.
