COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Two late chances in the game's final seconds failed to find the back of the net sending the Haverford College women's lacrosse team to their first defeat of the season as the visiting Fords fell, 10-9, to Ursinus College in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night.
Haverford (8-1, 0-1 CC) was led by Josie Ferri's three goals and two assists and teammate Alexa Pesce added two goals in the loss. Ferri has 30 goals in eight games this season after accumulating 47 in 15 games in her freshman campaign last year.
Ursinus (6-2, 2-0 CC) got three goals, including the score that tied the game at 9-9, from Emily Hummel. Three Bears players scored two times apiece with Emily Diehl's second tally finishing as the game-winning goal with 1:41 left on the clock.
Ferri and Pesce opened the scoring putting Haverford up 2-0 early in the first half but Ursinus scored three goals in a row to take over the lead.
Later in the half, with the Bears ahead 4-3, the Fords tallied three in a row themselves as Jen Schmidt, Perrin Downing and Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds all scored for Haverford in a span of 2:28.
After taking a 6-5 lead into the intermission, the Fords later found themselves tied 7-7 with the Bears before Pesce and Ferri gave the visitors a two-goal edge and with less than 11 minutes on the clock.
Ursinus rallied over the remaining minutes with three unanswered goals culminating with Diehl's score.
The Fords appeared to have tied the game with under 30 seconds left, but the goal was waived off due to a foul by an Ursinus player. The resulting free position shot was saved by Bears goalie Alex McBride preserving the home team's victory.
Haverford will travel to Dickinson College for its next outing, a Saturday conference game beginning at noon.
