HAVERFORD, Pa. – A trio of second half goals led the Haverford College field hockey team to a 4-1 Centennial Conference triumph over visiting Franklin & Marshall College Saturday afternoon at Swan Field.
The Fords (9-4, 4-2 CC) received consecutive goals from Margaret Selsor, Mary Hobbs and Juliana Morgan-Trostle over an eight-minute span early in the second half building, on a 1-0 halftime lead over F&M (6-7, 2-5 CC).
A closely-played opening 35 minutes finally tilted Haverford's way on the scoreboard with a Selsor goal from a Hobbs pass in the 32nd minute.
Following the break, the Fords' offensive attack began swarming around the F&M net and goalkeeper Avery Koep.
Alex Waleko's blast from just inside the circle and high right of Koep was tipped in by Selsor to extend the lead to 2-0 at the 43:38 mark.
Three minutes later, Hobbs picked up a loose ball in a scrum off a Morgan-Trostle shot and buried her own shot to push the lead to three. Morgan-Trostle added her tally five minutes later to give Haverford its first four-goal lead over the Dips since the two began competing as conference foes in the Centennial's initial season of 1993.
Franklin & Marshall tried to rally getting a goal from Kimmy Fisher in the 62nd, but the Fords didn't allow the visitors to creep any closer in Haverford's fourth straight win over the Dips.
The Fords' Maggie Cronin earned the win in goal making three stops while Koep took the loss for F&M despite making eight saves.
The victory keeps Haverford solidly in the hunt for a postseason Centennial playoff spot. Saturday's result keeps the Fords in, at worst, a tie for third place. The only conference losses so far have come against the two teams sitting atop the league standings.
Washington College visits the Fords Wednesday night in the first of the regular season's final four outings. The Shorewomen defeated Gettysburg Saturday to remain tied with the Fords in the Centennial standings.
