Fords, Knights open women's soccer Kickoff Classic with tie

HAVERFORD, Pa. - In a game dominated statistically by the host Fords, the opener of the 2009 Kickoff Classic nonetheless finished in a scoreless tie between Haverford's soccer women and visiting Arcadia University.

Haverford (1-0-1) out shot the Knights (1-0-1) by a 21 to four margin and had 11 corner kick opportunities compared to only three by the visitors on a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon at Walton Field.

The closest either team got to breaking the deadlock was 38 seconds into the second overtime when Haverford's Katie Van Aken drove in from high on the left, beat her defender and, while falling down, chipped a shot over the diving Arcadia goalie towards the open goal. From somewhere on the right a Knight defender raced along the goal line and blocked the apparent game-winner high and wide to fend off certain defeat.

Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds closed out the contest with four saves in goal for Haverford while her Arcadia counterpart, Jacki Law, registered six saves.

The Classic continues on Saturday afternoon with a contest between Wilkes (Pa.) and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. On Sunday, the Fords will battle Wis.-Oshkosh at 1 p.m. followed by the Classic finale between Arcadia and Wilkes.
