WESTMINSTER, Md. – A year ago it was the same scenario – winner makes the Centennial Conference tournament and the loser goes home. Last season McDaniel College got the best of the Haverford College field hockey team by a 3-2 score. Saturday afternoon the Fords returned the favor by the same score and earned their first conference playoff berth.
Deadlocked at 2-2, after the Green Terror tied the score in the 66th minute, Mary Hobbs scored the biggest goal of her young collegiate career in the 69th minute to give Haverford (8-9, 6-4 CC) the lead for good.
The Fords held a distinct advantage in shots (11-5) and penalty corners (22-5). Haverford took seven shots in the first half with two finding the cage.
McDaniel (7-10, 4-6 CC) scored first when Katherine Jones crossed to Eliza Blatchford who tapped in the ball in the 24th minute. Less than two minutes later the Scarlet and Black evened the score as Josie Ferri fed Juliana Morgan-Trostle.
Haverford took the lead before the end of the half. Hobbs passed to Ferri and the ball trickled off her stick for a 2-1 advantage.
Ten penalty corners and four shots were taken in the first 20 minutes of the second half until someone finally scored. Jones tied the score on an unassisted goal in the 66th minute. With less than four minutes to go the Fords were awarded a penalty corner. Off the corner, Hobbs lifted her shot into the right corner of the goal to send Haverford to the conference playoffs.
Maggie Cronin made two saves for HC while Stephanie Thomson stopped three shots.
The Fords are the No. 4 seed will host No. 5 seed Franklin & Marshall College in the Centennial Conference quarterfinal game Wednesday. The time will be announced Monday. Haverford defeated the Dips 3-1 back on Oct. 17. The winner will play No. 1 seed Ursinus College Saturday in the semifinals.
