Mules outscore men's soccer in second half for 4-2 win

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Despite no goals being scored in the first 64 minutes, the final 26 minutes provided enough action for the entire game as Muhlenberg College defeated the Haverford College men's soccer team, 4-2, on a soggy Walton Field Saturday afternoon. This Centennial Conference clash was a one-goal game until the Mules added an insurance goal with seven minutes remaining.

Muhlenberg (10-3-1, 6-1 CC) had an aggressive attack as evidenced by its 21 shots taken in the contest. They took 11 in the first 45 minutes to just one for Haverford (6-9, 1-6 CC). The Fords totaled nine for the game.

The stalemate was ended in the 65th minute when Tom Reilly kicked in a rebound for the Mules. In the 68th minute Muhlenberg scored again as Cody Antonini put the ball in the top right corner from the six yard line on an assist from Eric Miller. Miller then made it a 3-0 advantage when Antonini fed him in the 69th minute.

The Fords came storming back to make it a one-goal game. With 14 minutes remaining Max Stossel collected the ball from a scramble in the box and passed it to Chris Dioguardi who kicked it in to the low right side. Three minutes later Jeff Rickert scored his first goal of the season when he collected a carom off the cross bar to make the score 3-2.

On the ensuing possession the Fords were awarded a corner kick, but were called for a foul. Four minutes later Muhlenberg virtually put the game out of reach as Miller chipped in from the 18 yard line. Haverford took two shots and two corners in the final five minutes, but could not find the goal.

Jamey Applegate made eight saves in goal for the Scarlet and Black while Jason Daniels had four for the Mules.

The Fords travel to Washington College Wednesday evening for a 7 p.m. start, then close out the season hosting Swarthmore College next Saturday, Oct. 31.
