Senior Jake Weisenthal exemplifies the
Haverford ideal of balancing rigorous academics with a wide array
of extracurricular activities.
As a Spanish and political science
double-major, Weisenthal has plenty on his plate academically in
addition to tennis. When adding in a year as the Student Council
Vice President, two years as part of the customs program (serving
as Customs Week Co-Head, PAF Committee Co-head, and as a PAF), and
being a math tutor and Spanish TA, time is hard to come
by.
However, Weisenthal looks at it as having
been a critical part of his Haverford experience.
“These extracurriculars have allowed me to give back to the
Haverford community,” said Weisenthal. “I've learned a
ton and gotten to know some incredible people in the
process.”
When asked about his tennis career Weisenthal
is equally modest, giving the credit to his coach, Sean Sloane.
“Over my four years he has taught me not only how to be a
better tennis player, but also a better student and individual. In
contrast to what might be expected from college sports, Coach
Sloane has never asked me to prioritize sports over my academic
well-being.”
Still, Weisenthal has put together four
impressive years on the court, including an undefeated senior
campaign winning five singles matches and two doubles matches as
well as posting the second-most wins the year before with eleven.
He also was named to the 2012 All-Centennial Conference Spring
Sportsmanship team and has been on the Centennial Conference spring
academic honor roll twice.
After graduating, Weisenthal plans on
pursuing a career in international law or development. He has
recently accepted a post-graduate fellowship with Princeton in
Latin America to build a domestic fundraising base for Pueblo a
Pueblo, an NGO that operates in Santiago Atitlán,
Guatemala.
