HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College Athletic Department
hosted its annual Sr. Award Ceremony on Tuesday, May 8, presenting
several awards to student-athletes from the Class of 2012.
After opening remarks from Director of Athletics Wendy Smith '87
and then Martha Denney, Dean of the College, the program was handed
off to senior class speaker Josie Ferri, selected by the
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), of the women's lacrosse
team.
Smith and Denney began the awards portion of the program
recognizing those seniors who have had their names etched into
Haverford's record books. The administrative duo then began to
announce the senior award presenters and recipients.
The A.W. "Pop" Haddleton Award is presented for perseverance,
dedication and loyalty, recognizing senior student-athletes for
outstanding contribution to an athletic team but who may have not
received the recognition that, for example, a regular starting
players does. Baseball's Daniel Maddy-Weitzman and women's soccer's
Lindsay Ryan shared the 2012 award.
Josie Ferri of women's lacrosse was presented with the Stephen
G. Cary '37 Award which is given to the senior who made the
greatest overall impact on the Haverford athletic program during a
collegiate career through some combination of athletic
participation and achievement, leadership, sportsmanship, off-field
athletic department involvement or other athletically-related
contributions.
Ferri became Haverford's first women's lacrosse All-American
since 2000 with her honor in 2011. A two-year executive
council member of Haverford's SAAC, Ferri was also a chair
member of the Centennial SAAC during her senior year. She is a
four-time selection to the all-Centennial team and finished her
career ranked third in the program in points and goals and first in
draw controls.
The Gregory Kannerstein '63 Award, formerly the Alumni-Varsity
Club award, was presented to men's lacrosse goalkeeper Joe Banno.
The award is given to an individual whose combination of
outstanding athletic achievement and leadership has been a
significant factor in a team's competitive success, and whose level
of performance has brought distinction not only to the individual
and team but also the entire athletic program.
A four-year starter for the Fords, Banno was a third-team
all-American selection in 2011 and honorable mention selection in
2010. He is a two-time all-conference goalie and finished his
career at Haverford with program records in goals-against average
and wins, and ranks third in saves and saves per game. His 13
wins between the pipes in 2009 were the most in a single season by
any keeper in program history.
The final award of the night went to Tim Schoch who was named
the Varsity Cup awardee, presented annually to the outstanding
athlete in the senior class. Schoch raced at the NCAA Division III
cross country championship for the fourth time in the fall and was
a member of the 2010 national championship squad. He won 11
individual Centennial Conference track titles (indoor and outdoor)
-- more titles than the 2009 through 2012 classes combined -- and
is a three-time track All-American with the 2012 outdoor NCAA
championship still ahead.
Also recognized at the ceremony was Jacob Olshansky '12, the
recipient earlier in the spring of the William W. Ambler '45 Award
presented annually to the graduating student-athlete with the
highest cumulative grade-point average.
The senior Fords recognized early in Tuesday's ceremony as
owners of school records were: Jenine Abbassi (volleyball), Eric
Arnold (track & field), Banno (men's lacrosse), Jake
Chaplin (baseball), Erin Delaney (softball), Ferri (women's
lacrosse), Andrew Golato (track & field), Ian Goldberg (men's
basketball), Bryan Henrick (baseball), Roxanne Jaffe (field
hockey), Kylie Lipinski (women's track & field), Juliana
Morgan-Trostle (field hockey), Alexa Pesce (women's lacrosse),
Schoch (track & field), Katie Van Aken (women's soccer).
