PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Sports Information
Directors of America (Philly-SIDA) organization has released the
spring’s Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area
Teams and eleven Haverford College student-athletes have been
honored for their successes in the classroom and on the fields of
play, led by men’s track & field performer of the year
Tim Schoch.
Honorees of the academic all-area teams were nominated and voted
on by the Philly-SIDA sports information directors of the 28
institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area. In order to
be eligible, an athlete must be in his or her second year at the
institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or
higher.
Schoch, a double-winner at both the indoor and outdoor
Centennial Conference championships in 2011, helped cement his
place as track & fields’ performer of the year by racing
to All-America status at the indoor (distance medley relay, third
place) and outdoor (1,500 meter run, third place) NCAA Division III
championship meets. Teammate Anders Hulleberg, who participated in
the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs at the NCAA 2011 outdoor
championship, joins Schoch on the men’s track & field
all-area squad. Hulleberg was named the men’s cross country
2010 academic all-area performer of the year giving Haverford a
sweep of the Inquirer’s men’s awards for the
academic year.
Kylie Lipinski and Christina Neilson were voted onto the
women’s track & field academic all-area team. Lipinski
was named the Centennial Conference field performer of the meet at
the indoor and outdoor conference championships, sweeping the long
and triple jumps at the outdoor event after leaping to first place
in the triple jump and third place in the long jump at the indoor
meet.
Neilson swept the 55, 200 and 400 meter dashes at the
league’s indoor championship to earn the Centennial’s
track performer of the meet award. She raced to second-place
finishes in the 100, 200 and 400 at the outdoor league meet before
closing out her season at the NCAA championship meet with a 22nd
place in the 400.
All-American and Centennial player of the year Charlie Carluccio
was one of three Haverford players to be named to the
Inquirer's academic all-area baseball team. Carluccio was
voted onto the D3baseball.com all-America first team, and to the
American Baseball Coaches Association all-America third team this
spring. The senior shortstop led the Centennial in hits, RBIs and
total bases, and established new single-season program marks for
runs scored, hits and assists. He also set program career marks in
runs, hits, RBIs and assists.
Also voted onto the academic all-area baseball team were senior
third baseman Mike Galetta and senior second baseman Louis DeRosa.
Like Carluccio, Galetta and DeRosa were first-team all-conference
honorees. In addition, DeRosa was voted onto the American Baseball
Coaches Association’s 2011 Mid-Atlantic Region ABCA/Rawlings
Gold Glove Team.
Haverford placed three student-athletes, each a United States
Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) honorable mention
all-American, onto the academic all-area men’s lacrosse team.
Seniors Travis Gregory and Max Hjelm are joined on the 2011 team by
junior Dillon Hamill. Both Hjelm and Hamill were also voted onto
the 2010 academic all-area team.
Hjelm and Gregory, USILA Scholar-Athlete honorees, were
first-team all-Centennial players who were invited to play in the
prestigious USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game. Hamill was a
second-team all-conference selection.
Josie Ferri was voted to her first academic all-area squad in
2011. A third-team Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches
Association all-American and IWLCA all-Metro first-team selection,
Ferri was a first-team all-Centennial player who led the league in
game-winning goals. She led her team in points, goals, assists,
caused turnovers, ground balls, draw controls and free-position
goals.
