HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's indoor track & field team competed in their first home meet of the season Saturday afternoon, as fans and athletes alike packed Alumni Field House for the annual Seamus McElligott Invitational.
After the women's weight throw kicked off the Seamus McElligott Invitational at Widener University on Friday evening, the women's high jump began the second day inside Alumni Field House. Senior Ella Fleming set a new personal best with a 1.35-meter (4 feet, 5 inches) leap, earning a third-place finish. Just behind her was newcomer Beatrice Di Girolamo, who secured fourth place with a jump of 1.30 meters (4 feet, 3.25 inches). Rounding out the Haverford trio was senior Summer Ryan, who also jumped 1.30 meters (4 feet, 3.25 inches), finishing in fifth place.
Sophomore Grace Hannigan was the lone Scarlet and Black competitor in the triple jump, placing third with a distance of 10.38 meters (34 feet, 0.75 inches). Hannigan then competed in the long jump, soaring 4.75 meters (15 feet, 7 inches) to place fourth. Her teammate Zofi Sanders, recorded a jump of 4.11 meters (13 feet, 6 inches), finishing in ninth place.
In the shot put, Sarah Wilcher launched the shot 12.16 meters (39 feet, 10.75 inches), earning a third-place finish. After completing her jumping events, Ryan also joined Wilcher in the shot put, where she shattered her previous personal best of 8.64 meters, throwing 10.15 meters (33 feet, 3.75 inches) to secure 12th place.
Like Ryan, Di Girolamo also competed in the shot put, posting a distance of 8.91 meters (29 feet, 2.75 inches) for 22nd place. Fleming completed the Haverford throwing quartet by surpassing her previous personal best of 6.99 meters, recording a throw of 7.87 meters (25 feet, 10 inches), to place 25th.
Dominique La Grenade paced the Fords in the mile, running a personal best time of 5:34.09 to earn a third-place finish. Junior Jessie Hausman also set a personal best with a time of 5:45.95, finishing in sixth place, while Krysta Nichols edged out her previous record of 5:49.86, crossing the finish line in 5:49.21 for eighth place. First-year Dalia Smid earned 10th place with a time of 5:54.20, while Judy Xie ran a time of 6:25.81 for 19th place, also achieving a new personal best.
Nadine Tang took home ninth place in the 60 meters, clocking in at 8.39 seconds, while Sanders, competing in her second event of the day, set a personal best by sprinting to a time of 8.86 seconds for 14th place.
Senior Rachel November led the Fords in the 400 meters, finishing in fifth place with a time of 1:05.79, while first-year Emery Casucci placed eighth with a time of 1:08.73. Senior Sophia Furman joined the duo, recording a time of 1:09.58 for 12th place.
Over at the 800 meters, it was Savannah Shaw who took home first prize, crossing the finish line with a time of 2:25.44. Finishing in fifth and sixth place were Anastasia Jaycobs (2:28.75) and Alice Sappenfield (2:30.56) respectively, while Carly Priest (2:33.54) collected eighth place. Rookie Veronica Kanachova earned 15th place with a time of 2:37.23, followed by Fleming (19th, 2:42.64), Bianca Ortiz (20th, 2:42.68), and Betty Baraki (21st, 2:43.84). Other notable Scarlet and Black finishers in the event were Maia Poremba (26th, 2:47.97), Di Girolamo (30th, 2:52.50), Katie Strutton (31st, 2:56.81), and Natalie Kruglyak (34th, 3:04.950).
In a competitive 200 meters field, Tang returned to the track to finish in second place with a time of 27.93 seconds.
Another second-place finish came in the 3,000 meters, where Grace Chen set a new personal best with a time of 11:07.13. Poppy Chrisman also achieved her personal best, breaking her previous time of 12:43.14 by running 11:19.90 for fourth place, surpassing her old mark by more than a minute.
To cap off the Seamus McElligott Invitational, Haverford finished third and fourth in the 4x400 meter relay. The team of November, Hannigan, Casucci, and Sappenfield finished in third place with a time of 4:28.74, while the team of Ortiz, Jaycobs, Furman, and Shaw took fourth place with a time of 4:34.66.
Next up, the women's indoor track & field team will head to the Ocean Breeze Complex on Staten Island, N.Y., for the Fastrack National Invitational on Friday, February 7. The event is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
