COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Haverford College men's indoor track and field team returned from winter break to compete in the Collegeville Classic on Sunday morning at Ursinus. Despite some wintry conditions outside moving the start time up by more than an hour, the competition heated up inside the Floy Lewis Bakes Center.
Starting with the 60 meters, rookie Samuel Lin shined once again, darting to a time of 7.33 to capture the final spot in the 60-meter final. Nico Greene slotted into the 10th spot with a time of 7.50, while teammate Niko Bero finished right behind Greene in 11th with a time of 7.52, a new personal best. Zenas Boamah claimed 12th place with a time of 7.55, tying Thomas Fendig, who took home 13th place. Vir Goyal achieved a new personal best, sliding into the 15th slot with a time of 7.60, while senior Nathan Ma also came away with a new personal best, dashing to a time of 7.66 for 17th place. Jonah Hoffman-Weitsman (23rd, 8.04) and Amon-Ra Kamit (26th, 10.90) rounded out the contingent for Haverford. In the 60-meter final, Lin raced to a time of 7.34, good for a third-place finish.
At the 200 meters, rookie Mark Tringas achieved a new personal best with a time of 24.28, to finish in third place. Teammates Lin and Boamah crossed the finish line at the same time (24.70) to place sixth and seventh in the race. Derek Linden claimed a new personal best with a time of 25.53 to take 10th place, while Jackson Juzang (11th, 25.55), Hoffman-Weitsman (12th, 26.41), and Jory Lee (13th, 26.60) concluded the Fords' participation in the event.
In the 300 meters, Fendig captured a blazing time of 36.34 to finish in second place, while Goyal raced to a time of 37.69 to take home fifth place. Greene slotted into seventh with a time of 38.27, while Linden collected 10th place with a time of 40.20.The lone Haverford participant in the 1,000 meters, Jason Mayo, garnered a sixth-place finish with a time of 3:20.58.
Over at the mile, it was Luke De Valpine who grabbed third place with a time of 4:26.33, achieving a new personal best. Just behind De Valpine was the duo of Seamus Fraser (4:27.26) and Jakob Maiwald (4:27.75), as the pair finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Gopal Patel earned a new personal best with a time of 4:56.71 to finish 10th, while Reef Kirchner also achieved a new personal best time of 4:56.38 to complete the trek in 11th place. Finishing just behind Kirchner was senior Seawon Park, who crossed the finish line in 12th place with a time of 5:10.86.
A Haverford-heavy 3,000 meters saw Micah Lachman take home the prize, crossing the finish line in 8:53.77, a new personal best. Senior captain Reed Solomon finished just behind Lachman in second place, with a time of 9:11.11. Finishing fourth through seventh were Torin Pelton-Flavin (9:33.92), Nicky Elias-Gillette (9:35.52), Tate Sheehy (9:35.78), and Kieran McDonnell (9:37.52, new personal best). In ninth place was Tommaso Wheeler (9:56.03), followed by Cullen Worth in 11th place (10:04.21).
In the sand pit, Juzang led a Scarlet and Black quartet by leaping 5.92 meters (19 feet, 5.25 inches) to finish in fourth place in the long jump. Teammate Mark Tringas grabbed fifth place after jumping 5.89 meters (19 feet, 4 inches), while Nathan Ma (5.83m, 19 feet, 1.5 inches) and Lee (5.78 meters, 18 feet, 11.75 inches) rounded out the group of four by finishing in sixth and seventh place.
At the high jump, teammates Juzang and Mayo tied for fifth place with jumps reaching 1.58 meters (5 feet, 2.25 inches).
Will Singer was the lone competitor in the weight throw, as the first-year threw a new personal best distance of 11.77 meters (38 feet, 7.5 inches) to earn seventh place. The throw was the second-farthest in school history for the indoor weight throw. Singer also competed in the shot put, where he hurled the shot 10.58 meters (34 feet, 8.5 inches) for a seventh-place finish overall.
Men's track & field will now return to action on Friday, January 24, for Widener's Winter Evening Invite at Penn, inside the brand-new Ott Center on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The competition is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
