Senior Day Sweeps as No. 32 Women's Squash Makes Quick Work of No. 35 Bucknell, No. 30 Vassar

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The No. 32 Haverford College women's squash team (3-8) secured a pair of sweeps on Saturday, defeating No. 35 Bucknell and No. 30 Vassar with 9-0 final scores at the GIAC Squash Courts. 

Haverford paid tribute to its senior class of Maya Johnson-Fraidin and Emi Krishnamurthy before the first serve of the late afternoon match against Vassar.

Saturday also marked the annual Play With Pride match, celebrating Haverford's LGBTQ+ community members and supporting advocacy by and for the LGBTQ+ community. Play with Pride events occurred this past week on campus, including Play with Pride Men's and Women's basketball games on January 25, as well as the Track & Field meet on January 27.

Haverford dominated Bucknell with a sweep at all nine flights of the ladder in the morning match. In the first round of matches, Catherine Fortin overcame Ellie Hyder, allowing just nine points in an 11-2, 11-4, 11-3 victory at the second flight. Krishnamurthy displayed a commanding performance at the third flight, allowing just six total points (11-1, 11-3, 11-2).

Amelia Stevens took down Tegan Kelsall at the fifth flight (11-5, 11-2, 11-4), allowing just 11 total points, and Matilda Chartener was similarly dominant in an 11-2, 11-0, 11-2 win over Lexi Ross at the seventh flight.

In the second round of matches, Zoe Liu dispatched Paige Roulette at the fourth flight, allowing just 10 total points(11-3, 11-3, 11-4). Ariana Solecki got past Charlotte Brauer at the top flight (11-5, 11-1, 11-5), and Johnson-Fraidin defeated Harmony Smith (11-4, 11-5, 11-2) at the sixth flight.

Amy Saxon pushed past Ingrid Houtkooper, allowing just one total point in a strong display (11-0, 11-1, 11-0) at the eighth flight, and Lily Matthews defeated Sydney Duncan, surrendering just three total points. (11-2, 11-0, 11-1).

In the exhibition match, Sabine Mejia dispatched Skye Gilbert (11-2, 11-6, 11-7).

Facing Liberty League rival Vassar, the Fords turned around a 6-3 defeat from December with ease, securing sweeps at all eight contested flights after the ninth flight was defaulted by the Brewers.

Fortin swept past Adriana Ordaya (11-2, 11-6, 11-4) at the second flight, and Krishnamurthy was a winner in three over Sehar-Dey Kohli at the third flight (12-10, 11-3, 11-5). Stevens allowed just eight points against Sophia Choudhri, delivering an 11-0 win in the first game en route to a sweep at number five (11-0, 11-4, 11-4). Chartener allowed just seven points in an 11-3, 11-0, 11-4 takedown of Perla Leal at the seventh flight.

Liu fended off Sarah Boucher-Rowe at the fourth flight (11-9, 11-3, 11-2) before Solecki rallied from a third-game deficit to secure a sweep over Anna Lee at the top flight (11-7, 11-7, 11-9). Johnson-Fraidin delivered a sweep over Kelsey O'Connell at the sixth flight, closing things out in extra points during the third game (11-5, 11-4, 13-11). Saxon ceded just five total points to Mea Vesci at the eighth flight (11-2, 11-2, 11-1).

Haverford now returns to action next weekend, hosting No. 14 Colby at the GIAC Squash Courts on Friday, February 2 (6 p.m.) before heading out to No. 24 Dickinson on Saturday, February 3 (12 p.m.). The Liberty League Championships are then on deck for February 10-11 in Canton, New York.
