ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Haverford College women's squash team lost its season-opening match to the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, 6-3 on the campus of the United States Naval Academy on Saturday afternoon.
Three Fords scored victories in sophomore
Isabelle Gotuaco, junior
Atalanta Henderson and senior
Ava Lichauco. Gotuaco registered a sweep at the No. 1 position over Gabby Nyirjesy (11-4, 14-12, 11-8). Lichauco nabbed an 11-4 win to start her match and secured a close 12-10 victory to take a 2-0 lead. After dropping an 11-3 decision, the senior regained focus to win 11-9 in game four. It was Lichauco's first career triumph. Henderson saw herself behind, 2-1, before rallying with tight 11-8, 11-9 victories to record her first career win in five games.
Senior
Bethany Simmonds jumped ahead, 2-0 behind two stingy 11-9 wins, but Keely Herrina came back with three straight wins (11-8, 11-5, 11-8) to take the point for Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays picked up victories in the first five matches to clinch the victory over Haverford.
Haverford's match vs. Fordham was cancelled. Both Haverford squash teams welcome Dickinson (10:30 a.m.) and Vassar (3:30 p.m.) to the GIAC Squash Courts next Saturday.
