Men's squash battles Hopkins in Baltimore

BALTIMORE – Haverford College's men's squash team, ranked 41st in the most recent national poll, was unable to overcome the strong play of No. 28 Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-0 to the host Blue Jays at Meadow Hill Athletic Club.

Haverford's season record falls to 1-3 while Hopkins improves to 5-1 on the year.

The Fords' efforts were led by strong matches from Laurenson Ward, Arman Terzian and Matt Rohn as the trio each picked up one win in 3-1 losses to their Hopkins opponents.

Ward won his opening game, 11-7, against Peter Wu at No. 2. Wu kept Ward off balance the rest of the way in 11-5, 11-9 and 11-8 wins for the victory.

Terzian was a few shots away from capturing one or both of his opening games against Aditya Mithal at No. 5, losing narrowly by scores of 11-8 and 11-9. Terzian took game three, 11-8, before Mithal answered with an 11-4 game-four win to clinch the point for his Blue Jays teammates.

At No. 6, Rohn opened with a strong 11-7 win over Janvier Chalopin, but the host player from Hopkins stormed back with consecutive wins for a 3-1 victory.

Saturday's match completes the fall-semester portion of Haverford's schedule. The Fords return to action in 2014 with alumni matches on January 11 followed by the Pioneer Valley Invitational on January 17 and 18.
