HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's soccer team has been ranked at No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches (formerly the NSCAA), the organization announced in a release. The Fords' ranking is the same spot where the team finished the 2016 season nationally after making its second straight NCAA Tournament and hosting the regional rounds on Walton Field.
Haverford went 14-3-4 overall a season ago, including an 8-1 record in Centennial Conference action. The Fords hosted and won the Centennial Conference Tournament for the second consecutive season before advancing to the NCAA Tournament second round. Haverford has graduated the winningest class in program history during each of those past two seasons advancing to the "Elite 8" in 2015.
The Fords, who are 26-4-2 on Walton Field during the past three seasons, will have a pair of nationally-ranked matchups based off of preseason rankings. Playing against the Mid-Atlantic Region's premiere teams in 2017, Haverford's home opener is set for Wednesday, September 6 at 5 p.m. against No. 11 Messiah. Franklin & Marshall will come to Walton Field on Saturday, September 23. The No. 6 Diplomats handed Haverford its only conference defeat in the past two seasons. Haverford avenged that defeat during a 2-1 victory in the Centennial Conference Championship match.
Elizabethtown is the final team recognized in the national preseason poll that the Fords will square off with in 2017. The Blue Jays are currently receiving votes in the national poll and will take part in the Jimmy Mills Tournament where Haverford will meet them at Eastern on Saturday, September 9.
After hosting its annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Aug. 26, the Fords will open the 2017 season on Friday, September 1 at Cabrini. Haverford has played for the Centennial Conference Championship in five of head coach Shane Rineer's six seasons at the helm, winning three conference titles.
