HAVERFORD, Pa. – The pre-registration deadline for the Joe Schwartz '83 3K Run/Walk is this Friday, March 24 at 5 p.m. Participants who register before this Friday's deadline guarantee themselves a race day t-shirt. Registration can either be completed online via the link above or in the GIAC Fitness Center.
In its tenth year, the annual Joe Schwartz '83 Run/Walk will take place on Sunday, April 9 at 12:30 p.m. The race will begin on Founders Green. A post-race barbeque will follow the 3K event.
In addition to the 3K Run/Walk, two other events will be held in conjunction with the event. The Susan Aronchick A Capella Concert will be held on Saturday, April 8th from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Marshall Auditorium.
In addition, a 3 vs. 3 Basketball Tournament will be held on Friday, April 7th in the Calvin J. Gooding '84 Arena. Both events will have proceeds go directly to The ALS Association. Participants are encouraged to check the information page for the latest updates on all of the weekend's events.
Last year, 332 participants gathered at Founders' Green with 93 runners finishing the 3K race and 123 finishers in the one mile walk. Over the nine total years of the event, over $55,000 has been sent to The ALS Association, which will fund research of the disease and patient care.
Joe Schwartz was a committed member of Haverford's cross country and track teams for the four years he attended Haverford, and he excelled in both sports. He encouraged those who won MAC Championships as well as students who were casual participants to be part of something bigger than themselves. From the moment he stepped on the Haverford campus, Joe was integral in building a proud tradition of athletic excellence at this school.
Proceeds for the event will be donated to The ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter and will directed towards both research and patients services. Amyotrophic Lateral Scleriosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a devastating progressive neuromuscular disease. Currently, the cause, cure and means of control are unknown. The ALS Association is the only national non-profit organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS.
